Reducing Disaster Risk

Sri Lanka enacted the Disaster Management Act No. 13 of 2005 following the most devastating natural disaster to hit the island in recent times, the tsunami in December 2004. The objective was to ensure that the country is better prepared to face natural disasters in the future. While this is a positive step the following discussion focuses on the improvement that is needed in terms of reducing the impact of extreme weather and other disasters brought on by climate change.
